Scores on Knight Funsheet

Most of you didn't read the instructions and lost 5 points. - problems 4-6 required you to give 1 move and name the tactic you were using. Charles correctly identified fork, discovered check, and coublecheck. Worksheet was worth 20 points.
SCORES :
15 - Charles (he read the instructions)
13 - Isaac, Jon, Michael, Sawyer, Suhaas, Thomas
12 - Hale
11 - Everett, John, Lennox, Raiyan, Tapio, Theo, Zenji
10 - Nawal
8 - Bharath
0 - Dennis, Jacob (not turned in)

Solutions to some problems:

Problem 3 above: Problems 1, 2 and 3 were really all the same problem. Problem 1 was finding the final move, problem 2 was finding the penultimate (good word - look it up) move, and problem 3 was finding the first of 3 moves.
Solution: 1. Nh6+ double check!! Kh8 (not f8 which is immediate checkmate) 2. Qg8+!! (a queen sac!) Rxg8 (forced) 3. Nf7#

Problem 6:
1. c8=N+!! (double check) (Ka8 or Ka6)
2. Ra7#!

End of School Year Report

Click here for 200 Years of Chess History

The following charts are to be read right to left!
PASS means they can do the 2 Rook checkmate
2nd PASS means they can efficiently checkmate with K & Q
3rd PASS means the can efficiently checkmate with K & R

Luc made a bit of progress, then stopped coming
Thomas has really taken off in the last few weeks
John has made good progress in the last few weeks
Nawal has made steady progress from day one
Rigo's progress was erased by a few bad days
Reluctance to participate halted Jacob's promising start
This chart goes back to the fall because all 6 were in all 3 classes.
When you get up to 900 it takes more work to improve.
Kartik & Hale made steady progress which is hard at their high levels.
Gage progressed until a careless streak set him back
Everett has made strong progress this year
Lennox will be our third highest player next year -tournaments Lennox?
Isaac was overrated early but this session has made some progress
After a fast start, Bharath needs to apply lessons to his games.
Thomas preforms best under pressure. Steady progress.
Tapio needs look deeper in complex positions. Slow but steady.
Suhaas has made good progress. He's making good moves.
Look at Michael's graph! Plan on tournaments next year!
Jon made pretty steady progress this session
Theo struggled this session - all the new kids taking his points!
Looks like something clicked for Zenji about 4 wks ago
Dennis has been very helpful. He has trouble focusing during lessons
Sawyer is catching onto the game and enjoying his success
Raiyan's enthusiasm has contributed to his success
After a difficult start Charles has made good steady progress.

What a great group of children (in spite of a couple of bad weeks)
Looking forward to doing this again in the fall. We should be even better next year!
Players marked with * will be eligible for our team next year.
Let's do a few more tournaments!

Thomas L 4 3 0 417 515 +98 9.5  needs .5 for bronze
Did you look at the results? Here's how close it was - if Tapio had won both his games on Sunday, we would have finished in 7th. If Bharath or Kartik had gotten a draw in round 7, we would have finished in 7th. If Bharath or Kartik had gotten a win in round 7, we would have finished in 5th. If Hale were still on our team, we would have finished in 5th. We were a full point ahead of 10th place, but only half a point behind 5th place. So we are definitely one of the top chess clubs in Minnesota. You should be proud of your accomplishments. Let's work even harder next year and see if we can get one of the top trophies - because the top players also get medals.

1. Wayzata Central 21.5
2. Metcalf 18.5
3. Breck 17.5
4. Minnetonka East 17
5. Seward 16
6. MJDS 16
7. Robbinsdale Span. Imm. 16
8. Capitol Hill 15.5
9. Salem Hills 15.5
10. Harriet Bishop 14.5

Also Salem Hills is the only team in the top 9 that does not have 6th graders. So we were the top K-5 school in the State!

For next year we should have an even more powerful team -
Kartik, Everett, Bharath, Suhaas, Lennox, Michael and whoever
else decides they want to become good at chess.
