Gift ideas

I have ordered several chess sets and scorebooks from US chess. I get deals for ordering often, ordering bulk and one shipping charge. So I can offer sets to my students for my cost.

Sets are like the ones we use at school and include pieces, extra queens, black and white vinyl board and a carrying case with zipper, handles, and sleeve for a rolled-up board.

Nov 19 - Burnsville Metcalf (K-3,4-6) Great opportunity for 3rd graders or warm-up for Dec 3
Dec 3 - Burnsville Metcalf (Grade level and team) I think Kartik, Bharath, Everett, and maybe Connor and Zenji would make a strong 4th grade team. Kartik and Bharath have scored 3 points. We only use the top 3 scores, so with an extra we can just not count the one who has a bad day. Can we get a third grade team? Lennox, Suhaas, Jon. Suhaas has come to some tournaments and usually scores 2 points.
     We learned about pins today. 1) Find two big pieces on a line 2) Don't be in a hurry to take the pinned piece. 3) Attack the pinned piece.

White's turn. Good luck. Hint: in situations like this, it is imperative to stay on the attack - keep the black king in check lest he start attacking you. If Black plays well, it will take 7 moves to clear all of Black's pieces off the board! Numerous hurdles and threats of hurdles limit Black's options.

TOURNAMENT RESULTS

WOW! Did you all do well or what? Someone can add it up, but it looks to me like the team gained about 700 rating points. Alex and Isaac finished in the top half of Elementary and Bharath and Gage finished in the top half of Primary.

Primary Team: Got off to a fast start scoring 7 out of a possible 8 in the first two rounds and taking over 1st place! After round 4 we were in still in 5th place. After that we stayed in 10th place edging out Capitol Hill on tie-breaks to win the trophy!

Elementary: We made our move in rounds 5-6-7 scoring 7.5 points! After round 4 we were in 21st place, but we moved up to 14th by the end of round 7.

Elementary - 14th place and the SE regional trophy
There were 33 teams from over 70 schools there!

We finished ahead of some schools with good chess clubs - including the defending state champions!

Top finish in Elementary (grades 4-6) was Alex in 68th place out of 211
Top finish in Primary (K-3) was Bharath in 43rd place out of 177

If you decide to come at the last minute, just show up before 8:00 to guarantee you'll play round 1.
If you're late, you may forfeit round one, but still play the rest. Go to our team room when you first arrive.

Don't forget to register for the SCA Statewide Chess Championships by April 1 or the price goes up.
April 9-10 at the Breck School at 123 Ottawa Ave in Golden Valley
