Tournament Results

The 5th grade team (Lennox, Suhaas, and Zach playing up a grade) took an early lead over a good RSI team. We were still in 1st place after 4 rounds, but we couldn't keep them from passing us in the last round, They had two 4-pointers and we had none. So we ended in second - third place was a long way behind.

Zach was awarded his bronze medal, and Anvith received his gold medal.

The 3rd grade team also had a second place finish thanks to an outstanding performance by Anvith who earned the 2nd place trophy!

Nationals

Some of the more serious chess players should definitely consider going to the national chess tournament in Nashville Tennessee. Check out the USChesswww.uschess.org website. Click on "Play" along the top, then select "national events", then "National Elementary Championship".

Does it seem a little ridiculous? I thought so, too, when my daughter was in second grade and wanted to go to Nationals. Here I thought I'd found a fairly inexpensive sport for her to be involved in and now she wants to fly to Little Rock and stay in a hotel for 3 days? So I told her that nationals were for only the very best. "Like who?" she asked. "Like maybe the person who wins this tournament" I replied. Five games later she came back and asked "Now can I go?" Well, I had to say yes. But we had such a good time that every year after that we went to a National Championship Tournament - Tucson, Knoxville, Terra Haute, Sioux Falls, Peoria, Milwaukee(2), Nashville(2), Columbus (2), and Ft. Lauderdale. Several of the times she was part of a team, but we went every year to at least one.
But it was a very good decision - a great bonding experience. An experience that gave her confidence.
Some parents hesitated to take their child out of school for an extended period. Their classmates will never remember what they did that Thu-Fri at school, but your child will remember this experience for a lifetime. I highly recommend it.

CHESS RESULTS

A disappointing end to the season losing to Metcalf C. After scoring 1.5 against A 2 against B, I was hoping to score at least 2.5 against C to hold onto 3rd place. Click on "Jr High Chess League" for final results.

Today in class we looked at the four-move checkmate and some different openings - the Italian Game(Guiocco Piano), the Spanish game(Ruy Lopez), the Fried Liver, Queens Gambit, English Opening and the Blackburne Gambit (Garbage gambit)
We also went over the King and Rook checkmate - practice doing this so you can earn 15 rating points next time if you haven't already done it.

Results from Feb 1

For an update on how we're doing in the league, click on the "Jr High Chess League" link in the upper right.

Suhaas and Anvith played last weekend in a USCF rated tournament. The USCF said Suhaas' rating is 832 whereas my system of rating had him at 836 last week. Anvith's rating was well within 100 points, so I think my system is a good approximation of what your USCF rating would be.
